Drawings whispered by dreams
Jaouen Salaün began drawing at the age of 16 after discovering a treasure trove of inspiration: a cardboard box of albums signed by, among others, Moebius, Tanino Liberatore, Paul Gillon, Juan Giménez… Starting from scratch, he then began drawing like a sportsman, with an extraordinary rigor.
In 2006, he signs his first album, “Nova” (Sun), written by Julien Blondel. The second volume is released in 2008. He then draws, for Christophe Bec, a spin-off of the Carthago series (Humanoides associés), “Carthago Adventures”. Volume 1 appears in 2011. In 2015, the duo starts a new science fiction series, “Eternum” (Casterman), whose volume 3 comes out in 2017. Since 2009, Jaouen also works as a rough man in advertising, mainly for the agency Pavillon noir. He occasionally produces covers for novels and comic books.
His artbook Dreambook allows us to explore another side of Jaouen Salaün’s work and talent. Here we are facing the illustrations of the dreams and thoughts of this artist. He realizes them all with the same gymnastics: in the evening before going to bed, almost in one go, without any prior reflections.
There is something unique about these illustrations and they really make one think of meditation work. One is often close to surrealism, sometimes with a line reminiscent of Moebius, but in any case, all these hundreds of works make us discover the raw part of Jaouen’s mind. Organized in six chapters (Dreamlike, Mystical, Mythological, Retro, Medieval, Science-fiction), this incredible sketchbook transports the reader to worlds that will not leave him unscathed. Whether sensual, terrifying or simply strange, nothing here will leave you breathless.
It is a work like no other, a door to the creative spirit of an artist like no other. This enormous work reads endlessly, and it is interesting to immerse oneself in it in the same conditions as the artist created it, before bedtime, to open new dreamlike doors.
