Pixel Things
As you may know, it’s nearly Christmas ! And Christmas may be about gifts (if you haven’t been naughty) but also about love, souvenirs and nostalgia… This sweet nostalgia from a simpler era, where at this time of the year all that mattered was the coming of Christmas morning. An era full of pj’s, hot chocolate, excitement and dreams, and an early waking on Christmas day, a rush to the living room, the smell of the Christmas, the crushing your sisters and brothers on the way, just to be the first in the room. And the first gift. A gift that was, for some lucky kids, a video games console, and for some, a super NES.
The Art of Pixel : Super NES is a book tribute to this amazing console from Nintendo. I must say I was in the Genesis team. I clearly remember the day I had to choose between Sega and Nintendo, and as my cousin already had a Genesis with games to share, as I had already played and liked many games from Sega, as I already had a Game Boy, I choose Sega. I never regretted the many joyful hours I spent on Streets of Rage, Sonic, Kid Chameleon, Toe Jam and Earl and many more. And I had lots of opportunities to play the Super NES with my friends. But sometimes, at the darkest hour of the night, when sleep does not come and when my mind rushes in the far corner of the universe, I get to think…. What if I had chosen the Super NES ? Would my life had been different ? I don’t know. Probably.
Anyway this was a long intro, and it’s time ta talk about the excellent book from Third Edition by Christine Bauer & Robert Bannert !
L’Art du Pixel : SNES is a treasure, with a delicate smell of pixels and nostalgia. Beautifully published, great to read, you will find there many classical references to cult video games. Chapters after chapters, you will dive from the platform games to the RPGs, from adventure to action etc. The authors speak about those genres, and the jewels that were created during this era on this console, that changed the face of gaming forever. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Castlevania, Donkey Kong, Street Fighter, Contra, F-Zero, Ghouls’n’Ghosts, Final Fantasy, Mother, Dragon Quest and many, many others are greatly highlighted in the book !
Each chapter is a quick read, with lots of informations and tips. But most of all, the screen shots are beautiful, they show the real power of pixels and how the game designers did wonders to bring a soul to games at a time where 3D was not even a thing. Colors are great, edition is perfect, a real and beautiful tribute to the original pixel artists who created the games.
So now it’s clear : at Geek-Art we love this book ! The only thing is to us is the cover, which might be slightly disappointing compared to the amazing quality of the book itself. Great writing, awesome art, L’Art du Pixel : SNES, wether you speak French or not, is a must have for any Super NES and pixels lover !
