Daydreaming
Alfred Liu is a Melbourne-based artist who grew up in China. He found himself between two worlds when he moved to Australia at the age of seven. Not speaking much English, he sought refuge in his imagination and the worlds he created. His work depicts his love for Australia, nostalgia for China and escapes from science fiction and fantasy.
Art was a kind of refuge for Alfred. Not speaking English when he arrived in Australia, he started playing video games. Then art became a means of escape in those worlds he knew. But as his English improved, art became a means of escape from his sometimes chaotic personal life.
You can feel a ton of influence that Alfred manages to mix to perfection to create his own universe, with his own style. Sometimes you see a bit of Moebius, at other times you feel the inspiration of Yoshitaka Amano, character designer on several Final Fantasy. Some of his creations are part of a current between fantasy and daydreams, finding the atmosphere of a Final Fantasy IX and other JRPG.
It’s a discovery that touched me personally so much that I would like to discover more and see this universe come to life in an even deeper form. Big big crush!
