In space, no one hears you design
It’s a long while since we last spoke about alternate movie posters in our pages ! It was about time, and the works of David Graham are perfect to get back to business. David is indeed a specialist of alternate movie posters, but on the contrary of many fellow alternate movie posters makers, he is not an illustrator. If galleries such as Mondo or Bottleneck almost essentially collaborate with illustrators, it’s mainly because the artworks of geniuses like Nicolas Delort, Matt Taylor, Jason Edmiston or Laurent Durieux are fantastic, but also because photorealistic movie posters may seem an easy way for some.
And it is really, really wrong. David Graham‘s portfolio is absolutely stunning. Amazing art direction, composition, use of colors, space and photos. He shows us that no matter the medium used, what really matters in a movie poster is the IDEA. And he has lots of great ideas, special kudos for his Alien poster, or The Thing, or the way he brilliantly uses typography in The Fly, with a small “fly” stuck like a fly on “the”. Perfection.
