The Grim Darkness of a Far Future
You must know it by now, I am a very big fan of the Warhammer 40000 universe. A universe that gives its name to a completely crazy wargame where, once your faction is chosen, you buy units, characters, vehicles, that you built and paint with love. Each faction has its own graphic universe, its specificities, its codes, its history… This is probably what I like the most in this game: the lore. If I enjoy playing it from time to time and painting with passion miniatures assembled with love, it is above all the universe in which the game propels me that fascinates me. A distant future, an Imperium of Humanity on the decline, genetically modified marines, an oppressive gothic atmosphere, the threat of aliens on the outskirts of the Imperium, heresy and Chaos demons in its midst… The universe of 40K is simply fascinating and, above all, very vast. Immense. Dense. A universe so powerful graphically that it inspires artists from all over the world, including (finally we come to it) the brilliant Nicolas R Giacondino. This artist gives us a very “comics” vision of the 40K universe, while keeping this violent, dark and rich aspect. Space Marines, Imperial Guards, Inquisitors, Assassins, Commissioners… The field of possibilities is vast and Nicolas tackles many iconic figures of this universe. For the fans, you will find Blood Angels as well as Ultramarines, Word Bearers and Iron Warriors, but also Fulgrim, Perturabo, Guilliman, Horus the Warlord, the Emperor of Humanity, and so many others!
I couldn’t resist sharing with you as many of his works as possible, but that’s nothing compared to the impressive amount of visuals he offers on his Artstation. Whether you are a wargame lover or not, I invite you to dive into Nicolas’ universe, and why not try a book or two on the subject…
