Below is a short interview of the artist…
Can you please introduce yourself ?
I’m Greg “Léon” Guillemin, I’m still in my 40’s (for now), and I play with my computer, my pencils and with my paint brushes.
Since when have you been working on the Secret Life of Heroes series ?
It all began in January of 2013 !
What was your idea ?
At first, I simply wanted to work on an erotic painting series, and to use the bright colors and bold black lines that were reminding me of comic books. The result was nice, very aesthetic… But it needed something more. In my previous works I was creating a real bond between my artworks and the audience, something that was inviting them to ask themselves questions, to spend time looking at the artwork. That is when I got the idea to use super-heroes in my paintings, in the erotic scenes. That was it ! No one had ever seen the heroes in those quite simple scenes of everyday life !
How do you work ?
At first it’s a real work of the mind : what hero to use, what situation, what is the goal of the artwork… Then comes the time of the pencil, then I work on computer, and sometimes I paint directly on canvases.
How do you find your ideas ?
Well, in everyday life, mostly ! Sometimes I catch a moment in the street, I see a picture in a magazine, a post on Facebook, and I wonder what a super hero would do in such a situation. I’m looking for the most obvious hero, the one that would make sense.
Are those artworks available in limited quantities ?
Not always. I have a workshop in which I can paint original pieces, but I also work on computer to create limited series, so that my work can be bought by anyone !
How many Secret Life did you create ?
I think it must be something like 300 artworks. I’m also working on my Pop Icons series, with the same graphic spirit, and more than 100 pieces.
Any new projects in 2017 ?
We are currently thinking about new artshows with original artworks… But that’s a secret for now ;o)-
How do your work travel the world ?
Well the Secret Life of Heroes already made their way to Miami, NYC, Chicago, San Diego, Montreal, Rome, London, Geneva, Lausane, Montreux and Paris…
Thanks a lot Greg ! See you guys at the Sakura gallery !
