Patrick Connan est un graphiste Français bien connu des afficionados de Geek-Art.net : de sa participation aux expositions Final Frontier et Heroes jusqu’à ses prints inédits sur le Geek-Art Store, Patrick est désormais un habitué du site, et prouve à nouveau son talent avec le prochain print exclusif du Geek-Art Store : Turn the Light Off. hommage à Jurassic Park. Petite interview en 2 parties…

Patrick Connan is a French graphic designer you might well know if you’re a Geek-Art.net reader. He was part of the art shows Final Frontier (tribute to Star Trek) and Heroes (tribute to super heroes) and has a few exclusive prints on sales on the Geek-Art Store. Patrick decided to collaborate again with Geek-Art through a new exclusive print tribute to Jurassic Park : Turn the Light Off. Short interview in two parts.

• Geek-Art.net : Première question un peu habituelle : pourrais-tu te présenter en quelques mots ? 
• Patrick, 28 ans, sosie de Christian Slater le jour, graphiste et illustrateur la nuit !

• Geek-Art.net : First usual question : could you introduce yourself ?
• Patrick, 28 years old, Christian Slater doppelganger by day, illustrator by night !

 

 

• Geek-Art.net : Comment es-tu tombé dans le geekdom ?
• Et bien un peu comme tous les gamins des années 80, Star Wars à la télé le dimanche soir sur TF1, le Club Dorothé avec Dragon Ball Z, les chevaliers du Zodiaques, les Tortues Ninja sur France 3, ma Nes, ma Méga Drive et tous les jeux qui vont avec. Bref un parcours typique !

• Geek-Art.net : how did you fell into the Geekdom ?
• Like the 80s kids, I guess : Star Wars and TMNT on TV, Dragon Ball Z and Saint Seya on wednesday afternoons after school, my NES, my Genesis, all those awesome video games… A normal childhood !

 

• Geek-Art.net : Quel est ton meilleur souvenir de jeune geek ?
• Ça pourra paraître cliché, mais c’est quand mon oncle m’a emmené voir Jurassic Park au cinéma. Il me savait fan de dinosaures et je pense qu’il a visé juste en me faisant la surprise… Ce fut mon geek orgasme. Et ma VHS peut en témoigner (enfin ce qu’il en reste…), je le regardais jusqu’à 3 fois par jour en vacances et le week-end !

• Geek-Art.net : what is your best “young geek” memory ?
• It may seem a bit cliché, but my best geeky memory is the day my uncle took me to watch Jurassic Park. He knew I just loved dinosaurs, and it was a surprise ! A real nerdgasm ! And my video cassette can testify. I later watched JP 3 times a day during week-ends and holidays.

• Geek-Art.net : Aujourd’hui, quel est ton rapport avec le geekdom et la pop culture ?
• Je suis féru de Geek-Art, je passe une bonne partie de mon temps libre à parcourir les sites de posters alternatifs à la recherche de nouveaux talents et de quoi décorer mes murs ! Sinon j’essaye de garder une activité vidéo-ludique… Mais le temps joue contre moi… J’ai beaucoup trop de jeux à terminer !

• Geek-Art.net : at nearly 30 years old, how do you deal with the geekdom and pop culture ?
• I just love geek-art, I love spending my free time exploring alternate movie posters websites, looking for new talents and new stuff to hang on my walls. I also try to keep playing video games, but times is against me. So much games to play !

• Geek-Art.net : super-héros au cinéma, GTA V vendu à des millions d’exemplaires, du Star Wars, du Marvel et du DC au cinéma pour les 10 ans à venir au moins… Ça t’inspire quoi cette explosion du geekdom dans l’entertainement ?
• Je ne suis pas contre, mais faudrait parfois faire du tri… Recycler les « BONS » films des années 80 pour en faire des bouses à la sauce CGI, très peu pour moi… J’ai très peur du prochain Jurassic World par exemple ! Après j’avoue être au taquet sur la prochaine trilogie Star Wars et je pense (et j’espère) que JJ Abrams saura honorer les fans !

• Geek-Art.net : super heroes everywhere, millions of GTA V sold, Star Wars, Marvel and DC in the theaters for the 10 years to come at least… What do you think about this geek tsunami ?
• It’s OK to me, but sometimes I really wonder… Like why do they have to recycle really GOOD movies from the 80s into crappy CGI nonsense ??? I’m very afraid of the next Jurassic World, for instance. But I also am very excited about the next Star Wars trilogy, I really think (and pray) that JJ Abrams can please the fans.

• Geek-Art.net : quel est on parcours professionnel, de graphiste ?
• Beaux Arts / Mise à niveau en Arts Appliqués / BTS communication visuelle, après un bref séjour de 2 ans dans la publicité me voici depuis plus de 5 ans graphiste dans une des plus prestigieuses agences parisienne de création d’affiches de cinéma… Que demander de plus ?

• Geek-Art.net : what is your carreer path ?
• Beaux-Arts (art school) / Art specialization / visual communication (note of Geek-Art.net : sorry guys I don’t know how to translate such specifically French school studies !). After 2 years in an ad agency, I’ve been working for 5 years in one of the best official movie posters agency in Paris. What more can I ask for ?

• Geek-Art.net : en tant que graphiste, qui sont tes modèles, tes inspirations ? Pourquoi ?
• Olly Moss car ce type est un Dieu… Matt Ferguson parce que lui aussi ! Ken Taylor pour ses posters rétro qui transpirent la classe. Et le roi des années 80, Drew Struzan, notre père à tous !

• Geek-Art.net : As a graphic designer, who are your references, what are your inspirations ?
• Olly Moss: this guy is a god to me… Matt Ferguson too ! Ken Taylor for his awesome vintage posters. And the king of the 80s, Drew Struzan, our father to us all !
